Overview
Set in the laid-back coastal beauty of Jeffreys Bay, this workshop is more than just learning techniques – it’s a chance to disconnect from the noise, reconnect with yourself, and explore new artistic mediums.
From intuitive painting on ceramic, to the sun-soaked magic of cyanotype printing, to the rich, tactile world of encaustic wax each day invites you to experiment freely and create without pressure.
Your experience begins with a welcoming arrival evening, where we gather around a beautiful private long table dinner, enjoy a delicious 3-course meal, and connect with fellow creatives – setting the tone for the days ahead.
The art experience is facilitated by local visual artist, Sarina Engelbrecht.
Day 1. Intuitive Landscapes on Ceramic
Create an intuitive landscape on ceramic, using acrylic paint to express mood, memory, and place in a free-flowing, non-functional art piece.
Day 2. Cyanotype Printing
Explore cyanotype, a sun-powered printing process that uses UV light to create striking blue botanical and photographic prints.
Day 3. Encaustic Wax
Experiment with encaustic wax on birchwood – an ancient medium using heated beeswax and pigment to build rich, layered, textured artworks.
Intuitive Landscape Painting on Ceramic
We begin our journey with a beautifully expressive process – intuitive landscape painting on ceramic plates.
Drawing inspiration from the vast openness of the Karoo or a landscape that lives in your memory, you’ll be guided to translate feeling into form. This is not about painting what you see, but rather what you feel – the colours, textures, and atmosphere of a place.
Working with acrylic paint on a smooth ceramic surface offers a unique experience – allowing for fluid movement, layering, and unexpected mark-making. You’ll be encouraged to let go of perfection and instead explore instinct, emotion, and flow.
Each piece is then sealed with an acrylic gloss varnish, enhancing depth and colour, and transforming your work into a striking, one-of-a-kind art piece.
This is purely expressive art, not intended for functional use.
What is Encaustic Wax?
We step into the ancient and captivating world of encaustic wax painting – a medium that is both tactile and luminous.
Encaustic is created by combining natural beeswax with resin and pigment, which is then heated and applied in layers. Each layer is fused with heat, creating depth, translucency, and a rich, almost glowing surface that cannot be replicated with other mediums.
You’ll be working on birchwood panels, an ideal surface that supports the weight and warmth of the wax while enhancing its natural beauty.
This session is all about experimentation and discovery:
- Building layers of wax and pigment
- Scraping back to reveal hidden textures
The process is immersive and sensory – the smell of warm wax, the movement of heat, the unpredictability of each layer. It invites you to slow down, to be present, and to create in a deeply intuitive and physical way.
What is Cyanotype?
Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic printing processes in the world – yet it feels almost magical every time you make one. Originally developed in 1842 by the scientist Sir John Herschel, this process was later popularised by botanist Anna Atkins, who used it to document plant specimens, creating what is considered one of the first photographic books.
At its heart, cyanotype is a dance between chemistry and sunlight. A light-sensitive solution is brushed onto paper or fabric, left to dry, and then exposed to UV light – most beautifully, the sun itself. Objects like leaves, flowers, lace, or even found textures are placed on the surface, blocking the light and creating soft silhouettes. Once exposed and rinsed in water, the image appears in rich, unmistakable shades of deep blue – often called “Prussian blue.”
What makes cyanotype so special is its sensitivity – not just to light, but to the environment. The strength of the sun, the time of day, the season, even the humidity in the air all influence the final result. No two prints are ever the same. It’s a process that invites you to slow down, observe, and collaborate with nature rather than control it.
This is not just printing – it’s creating with the elements. You are working with sunlight, water, organic materials, and time itself. Each piece becomes a one-of-a-kind imprint of a moment: a specific day, a specific light, a specific collection of natural forms.
In this workshop, you’ll be guided through the full process – from preparing your surfaces, to composing your artwork, exposing your prints in sunlight, and developing them in water. It’s tactile, experimental, and deeply rewarding – perfect for anyone wanting to reconnect with creativity in a more intuitive, nature-inspired way.
